METER

I had lunch with a former student who is now in college far away. I love hearing his snippets of stuff he's composed. 4 snippets today. First was a 9/4 ditty separated into 4/4 + 5/4. He made me smile when he said that the drums only played in 4/4 so there's a one beat silence in the rhythm section between the 5/4 and the next 4/4. Made me think fondly of John Bonham, the Bonzo drummer for Zeppelin. In "Black Dog" Bonham does his best LOUD Taiko drumming in 4/4 trying desperately to keep the John Paul Jones riff from running away........and god only knows, not even I have parsed what John Paul Jones did in parts of that tune! Also reminds me of Svoboda's Suite op. 126, 3rd movement. It's in 5/4. 2/4 + 3/4. I am SURE it should be a 2/4 upbeat with the meter parsed 3/4 + 2/4.

Tonight I meet up with another composer friend composing in a totally different style, along with another friend who's also a fantastic musician. I've spent a nice portion of the day working in the yard, I've enjoyed a great burger and fries. My cat serenaded me (in no discernible meter). Life is good.
